More than 26 lakh households across the country have benefited under the Prime Minister’s flagship PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY) as of December 2025, with the Centre disbursing ₹14,771.82 crore as Central Financial Assistance (CFA), reflecting rapid adoption of rooftop solar energy in the residential sector.

Launched in February 2024, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a demand-driven scheme open to all residential electricity consumers with grid-connected power supply from their local DISCOMs. Eligible households can apply for rooftop solar (RTS) installations through the National Portal of the scheme.

According to official data, a total of 20,85,514 rooftop solar systems have been installed nationwide since the launch of the scheme, directly benefiting 26,14,446 households. The scheme has seen widespread participation across States and Union Territories, with state-wise progress recorded in the order of RTS installations.

The initiative is aimed at reducing electricity bills for households while accelerating India’s transition to clean energy. Under the scheme’s long-term projections, rooftop solar installations across one crore households are expected to generate nearly 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity over time. This clean energy generation is estimated to result in a reduction of approximately 720 million tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions over the 25-year lifespan of the installed systems.

Officials said the scheme not only promotes energy self-reliance at the household level but also contributes significantly to India’s climate commitments, reduction of fossil fuel dependence, and strengthening of the domestic solar ecosystem.

With growing awareness, streamlined digital processes, and financial incentives, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is emerging as one of the country’s most impactful clean energy programmes, empowering citizens while advancing national sustainability goals.
